BAPL along with Changi Airports International plans to expand the airport further. The JSW Group has also shown interest in investing in airport infrastructure and development.

Future development includes aerotropolis growth under the Bengal Aerotropolis plan with terminal renovation runway upgrades and better operational systems are part of the expansion plan. The airport is also planned to be included under the UDAN scheme to improve regional air connectivity.

In the future the airport will be modified to handle larger aircraft such as Boeing 737. Long-term plans also include giving Durgapur Airport international status and improving direct global flight connections.
